Grief counselors were meeting with students at Moline Elementary
School and West Elk Junior High School this morning as the community
grappled with the shooting death of an 11-year-old boy in a hunting
accident.
Dalton Baty was deer hunting on his grandmother's land shortly
after 5:30 p.m. Sunday with his older brother and a classmate
when he was shot. Elk County Sheriff Janet Harrington said the
boy died at the scene, about a mile east of Elk Falls.
Authorities were still investigating the incident, including
whether the boys were hunting without adult supervision. Dalton
Baty was a fifth grader at Moline Elementary School, and his
older brother is in the seventh grade at West Elk Junior High.
