ELK COUNTY BOY DIES IN DEER HUNTING ACCIDENT

Posted on Mon, Dec. 06, 2004

Grief counselors were meeting with students at Moline Elementary School and West Elk Junior High School this morning as the community grappled with the shooting death of an 11-year-old boy in a hunting accident.

Dalton Baty was deer hunting on his grandmother's land shortly after 5:30 p.m. Sunday with his older brother and a classmate when he was shot. Elk County Sheriff Janet Harrington said the boy died at the scene, about a mile east of Elk Falls.

Authorities were still investigating the incident, including whether the boys were hunting without adult supervision. Dalton Baty was a fifth grader at Moline Elementary School, and his older brother is in the seventh grade at West Elk Junior High.
