The Tazewell Co. Sheriff's Department says the man accidentally
shot himself in the chest.
Story by Aaron Mesmer
A 21-year-old Buchanan County resident is dead after accidentally
shooting himself in the chest while hunting Friday afternoon in
Tazewell County.
The Tazewell County Sheriff's Department said Matt Rife, from
Deskins in Buchanan County, was putting his muzzleloader into his
truck when it discharged.
It happened in the Thompson Valley area of Tazewell County at about
5 p.m. on Friday.
Rife was hunting with two friends when the accident happened.
Sheriff H.S. Caudill said Rife probably died on the scene, but his
two friends rushed him to Tazewell Community Hospital where he was
pronounced dead.
Rife's body was taken to the Roanoke Medical Examiner's office on
Saturday.
