A man accidentally shot himself Sunday at his home in Pelican Rapids, Minn., the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department said.

William Thomas Rick, 38, shot himself in his lower abdomen with a black powder rifle while preparing to go hunting with a friend, the sheriff’s office said in a release. The shooting was reported about 5:30 a.m.

An ambulance took Rick to St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes, Minn., where he underwent surgery, the sheriff’s office said. He was in stable but critical condition late Sunday afternoon, a nurse said.
