An 18-year-old from Birmingham was injured Friday evening by a
shotgun slug from his own gun.
According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Christopher
Cook was walking out of a brushy draw approximately four miles north
of Fairfield when he was struck once in the abdomen by a shotgun slug.
According to a report from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office,
Cook appeared to have tripped and started to fall when, on his way
down, he pulled the trigger, shooting himself in the left side.
The slug passed through his body and exited without striking any
vital organs, the DNR reported.
