Senior lieutenant colonel Nguyen Tan Tai, who died Sunday from a
single gun shot wound to the head, was apparently returning from a
hunting trip with a friend, the police department confirmed.
Senior lieutenant colonel Nguyen Phi Hung, Deputy Director of Dong
Nai Police Department, on Wednesday said close friend Major Nguyen Van
Dan went together with Tai on a hunting trip to the Ma Da forest of
the natural reserve Vinh Cuu in Dong Nai province April 23.
At around noon, as the group was transporting their “booty” back to
Trang Bom, the car encountered kilometers of rough road, and a firearm
discharged accidentally at Tai in the vehicle.
Tai fell unconscious and the car rushed to emergency at Thong Nhat
hospital in Dong Nai where Dr Ngo Van Khoa received the victim in
critical conditions.
A CT (Computerized Axial Tomography) scan discovered a ball-shaped
bullet 5-cm lodged in his cranium, said Khoa.
The seriousness of the injury meant he was transferred immediately
to the People 115 hospital in HCMC, where he was pronounced dead on
arrival.
A notable detail was that when asked about the cause of the
accident, Major Dan refused to turn in to doctors the rifle that
accidentally discharged.
It was only until doctors called Dong Nai police for further
investigation that the gun was turned in.
Another Thanh Nien source confirmed the car taken on the hunt
contained dead carcasses when it brought the victim to hospital.
