Walker County Sheriff's deputies rushed to a shooting on Walnut
Grove Road, south of LaFayette, Georgia around six o'clock Wednesday
afternoon.
"We discovered that we had a 15 year old boy shot in the back of
the head and the back," said Sheriff Steve Wilson. "Apparently the
result of a hunting accident."
Wilson says the teen was turkey hunting with a friend in the
woods when a 46 year old man, accidentally opened fire.
"Apparently mistaken that young man for a turkey and fired a shot
in that direction striking young man in the head and the back,"
Wilson said.
The man was taken to the hospital with chest pains; the teen was
airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.
"We know young man was responsive to touch, but he was not
coherent," Wilson said. "That's a good sign that he was responsive
to touch."
Wilson says the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is
investigating the incident. Several agencies, including the GBI,
responded to the call, but the Sheriff is calling it nothing more
than a terrible accident.
"It appears from what we can tell initially here that it was
accidental in nature," Wilson said. "That doesn't mean there could
not be criminal charges coming forward, it certainly was not
intentional."
