A 15-year old male has been injured in what authorities are
calling a hunting-related accident.
The youth, who was transported to Lakes Region General Hospital
following the 8:30 a.m. incident in the Hudson Morgan State Forest
off Meredith Center Road, was shot by a 12-gauge shotgun and
sustained what Laconia Fire Chief Ken Erickson described as non-life
threatening injuries to his chest and face.
Fish and Game Off. Mike Eastman said the wounds were not
self-inflicted and that the victim was apparently hunting with at
least one other individual in the forest in an area just east of
Daisy Gardner Road and within several hundred yards of Meredith
Center Road.
Fish and Game Lt. Jim Goss, whose department has lead authority
in the investigation, has scheduled a 2 p.m. press briefing at
Laconia Police headquarters.
Goss said hunting-related accidents, while not uncommon, are
"very rare."
Today is the opening day of the state's turkey season, which
lasts until May 31. The birds can only be taken with a shotgun, said
Goss, but it was not immediately known whether the victim and his
party were hunting turkey.
