6:30 PM EST, November 16, 2007
AUBURN, N.Y.
A man was charged with criminally negligent homicide after he
accidentally shot his nephew while they were illegally hunting deer
Friday morning.
Emergency medical personnel and Cayuga County Sheriff's deputies
found 33-year-old Ricky Huffman of Cortland dead at the scene of the
shooting, which happened just after 7 a.m. on private property in the
town of Summerhill, about 30 miles south of Syracuse.
Sheriff's investigators said Michael Hall Sr., 49, accidentally shot
Huffman while they were hunting on family-owned property on the road
where Hall lives. Hall was charged with criminally negligent homicide.
Huffman was wearing camouflage clothing and an orange knit hat when
he was shot, deputies said.
The season for deer hunting in New York's Southern Zone does not
officially begin until Saturday. It opened Oct. 20 in the Northern Zone.
