NEWTON TWP. - A Scranton man was taken to a hospital after police say
he had been shot in a hunting accident near Cherry Hill Road on Saturday
morning in Lackawanna County.
Donald Hazelton, 22, and his uncle were hunting together in a field
near a wooded area off of Church Hill Road around 11:30 a.m., according
to state police at Dunmore.
Hazelton was hit with a shotgun blast from a third hunter who was
about 35 yards away in the wooded area, police said. When Hazelton and
his uncle began to yell that one of them had been struck, the third
hunter - an unknown male hunter dressed in camouflage -- fled on foot to
his vehicle, police said.
The vehicle is described as a taupe four-door Buick with a red landau
top, police said. Hazelton was taken to Community Medical Center in
Scranton for treatment of injuries to his head, arm, body and legs,
police said. His injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.
Police have no explanation as to why the hunter would flee and continue
to investigate the shooting as an accident.
Anyone with information about the owner of the vehicle or identity of
the hunter that shot Hazelton is urged to contact state police at
Dunmore at 963-3156.
