Elizabethtown Man Killed In Hunting Accident

KEENE-An Elizabethtown man has been killed in a hunting accident in Essex County.

Leo J. Hickey, 35, of Route 9N was shot in the head during a deer drive by Michael Smith, 43, of Lake Placid who thought he was shooting at a deer, State Police said.

Hickey is the son of Town of Keene Justice Constance L. Hickey and retired state Trooper Tom Hickey.

The shooting occurred off Lacy Road in the Town of Keene. Hickey was pronounced dead at the scene by Essex County Coroner Paul Connery. An autopsy will be performed.

During the investigation it was discovered that Smith is wanted in New Hampshire on felony drug charges. He is lodged in the Essex County Jail awaiting extradition.

Charges are pending against Smith for the shooting incident. The investigation is continuing.
