NY: Police investigating death of turkey hunter

State police investigating death of Bridgewater turkey hunter in Town of
Paris
The following is a press release from the state police:
On May 1 at approximately 4:00 p.m. the New York State Police in Marcy
were alerted to an overdue turkey hunter.
The hunter, Dale W. Effner, 58, of Babcock Hill Rd., Bridgewater had been
hunting wild turkey on private land located on Reservoir Road in the Town of
Paris. A search detail was organized and Mr. Effner was located deceased in
a heavily wooded area approximately one half mile West of Reservoir Rd.
The preliminary investigation by the New York State Police BCI and the
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police has indicated
that Mr. Effner accidently discharged his firearm striking himself.
Saturday was opening day of the New York State Spring turkey season. Mr.
Effner was declared deceased at the scene by Oneida County Coroner Steven
Wolanin and was transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. for an
autopsy. The investigation into this hunting fatality is continuing.
