An 11-year-old Des Moines boy suffered a foot injury Sunday evening while
hunting deer southwest of Winterset, according to a press release from the
Department of Natural Resources.
Maxwell Birmingham was hunting deer during the youth season with his
grandfather, Harold Birmingham, also of Des Moines, when the muzzleloader
rifle discharged, hitting him in the foot. He was sitting on the ground when
the incident happened at approximately 6 p.m. Sunday, officials said.
Maxwell was taken to Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset then
transferred to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. His injuries were
not considered to be life-threatening.
