Rigby Man Shot While Hunting - Man Mistaken For Deer

MADISON COUNTY, Idaho -- A man was shot while hunting in Madison County on Friday, police said.

William Korby Hansen, 35, was shot around 7:17 p.m. by another hunter, Mark J. Later, 57, police said.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office said the shooter mistook Hansen for a deer and shot him in the chest.

The shooting happened in a wooded area of Madison County near 5555 South and 5700 West, police said.

Madison County responders said they had to reach Hansen by foot to rescue him.

Rescuers took Hansen to a nearby field where he was airlifted to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, police said.

When taken to the hospital Hansen was in critical condition and went into surgery, police said.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office said the investigation into the shooting is continuing and charges are pending.
