Police investigate accidental shooting near Bogus Basin
BOISE -- The Ada County Sheriff's Department is investigating what they
said appears to be an accidental shooting.
It happened near Bogus Basin ski resort Sunday around 5:09 p.m.
Police said information so far indicates that a 16-year-old male had been
out hunting with his father and a friend.
The teen returned to a vehicle and was unloading the .30-06 rifle when he
accidentally discharged the gun.
The single round hit the teen's toe and went through the floor of the
The boy's father began driving down Bogus Basin Road toward Boise and
called 911 as he got closer to town.
Deputies and Ada County Paramedics met them on the road and transported
the 16-year-old to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center with what appeared
to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Even though the shooting happened in Boise County, the Ada County
Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation because that is where the
family called for help.
All evidence gathered indicates this was an accident.
The family, who is from Kuna, was in an area where hunting is legal. The
teen has a valid hunting license and deer tag.
Sheriff's deputies remind anyone handling a firearm to never point a gun
toward anything you don't intend to shoot, especially when you are loading
and unloading the weapon.
That's when accidental discharges are most common and all guns should be
unloaded when you are finished using them before going back to camp, to a
vehicle or home.
