Accident on ATV kills hunter near De Beque

A 70-year-old Mesa County man died in an all-terrain- vehicle accident Thursday while he was hunting near De Beque, authorities said.

The man was traveling with family members near South Dry Fork Road northwest of town when he lost control of his ATV.

The vehicle flipped on top of him and pinned him around 11:45 a.m., according to Mesa County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Heather Benjamin and Bureau of Land Management spokesman Tom Alvarez.

Firefighters with the De Beque Fire Protection District responded, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will identify the man and perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of his death.
