Lafayette man killed in hunting accident near Forked Island
A Lafayette man was killed in a hunting accident Saturday, near Forked
Island.
According to the Vermilion Parish Sheriff Department, 25 year old Ryan
Allen Guidry died after being accidentally shot while out hunting with
friends in Vermilion Parish.
Funeral services have been set for Guidry.
His funeral will be held today at 2 o’clock at Fountain Memorial Funeral
Home in Lafayette.
Sheriff Mike Couvillon said Guidry was hunting in a marshy area when the
accident took place.
Sheriff Couvillon says the information obtained from the survivor in the
case, while hunting the victim asked his pardoner to hand him a shotgun and
in doing so the gun accidentally discharged striking the victim in the upper
left chest area.
According to the International Hunter Education Association,
approximately 1,000 people in the US and Canada are accidentally shot by
hunters every year, and just under a hundred of those accidents are
fatalities.
Most victims are hunters, but non-hunters are also sometimes killed or
injured. Although some other forms of recreation cause more fatalities,
hunting is one of the few activities that endangers the entire community,
and not just the willing participants.
