Officers investigating shooting of teen hunter near Fincastle
An 18-year-old turkey hunter was shot and wounded Monday by a hunting
companion in northern Botetourt County, a state Department of Game and
Inland Fisheries officer said.
The victim, Christopher Broughman of Covington, was hit by a shotgun
blast and was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, said Lt. Tony
Fisher. Broughman was in good condition Monday afternoon, hospital spokesman
Eric Earnhart said.
Authorities withheld the name of the shooter because he is a juvenile,
Fisher said. No one has been charged.
The two hunters were on private land off Zion Hill Road near Fincastle
when the shooting happened just before 9 a.m., Fisher said.
Officers are investigating whether the shooting was an accident.
The shooting is the area's first hunting-related injury from a firearm
this year, Fisher said.
In October, a 15-year-old girl hunting with family in Craig County was
accidentally shot in the chest. She has recovered and is playing softball
again this season.
