TOWN of SPRINGWATER – A Brown Deer man hunting turkeys in
Waushara County Thursday died of a single gun shot from a 12 gauge
shotgun on land situated about a quarter-mile from the intersection
of County Road A and K in the town of Springwater.
Alvin B. Mattison, 71, had been hunting alone on land owned by
his friend Earl J. Hill, Jr. of Brown Deer. There is no evidence
that anyone else was involved in the shooting, according to a news
release from Sheriff David R.
Peterson.
Deputy Coroner Pat Handel determined Mattison’s death was the
result of the single gun shot. The shotgun was recovered on the
scene.
The sheriff’s office received a 911 call at 3:50 p.m. Thursday
that a hunter with a gunshot wound had been found in the woods.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene and determined he was
dead, the news release said.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is investigating
the incident.
