A Missouri man was injured Saturday morning while hunting
pheasants northeast of Spencer in Clay County.
Steve Nelson, of Independence, Mo., was struck in the upper
thigh, hand and arm by a 12-gauge shotgun being carried by a
juvenile walking behind him in their hunting party as the group was
finishing the hunt at approximately 9 a.m.
Nelson was taken by other members of his hunting party to the
Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer where he was treated for
non-life threatening injuries.
DNR Recreational Safety Officer Marty Eby said the incident
underscores the need for hunters to always be sure that their
firearm muzzles are pointed in a safe direction.
"In this case, we probably wouldn't have had an injury if the gun
had been pointed in a safe direction, even if it was accidentally
discharged," said Eby.
Eby said experienced hunters also need to provide constant
supervision of younger hunters to reinforce positive safety
practices.
The incident remains under investigation.
