October 23, 2017

The hunter has been identified as Mark Shields, Sr., 66, of Savannah. Bryan County Deputy Coroner Tommy Flanders says Shields died of natural causes.

Officials for Fort Stewart say a hunter who was reported missing has been found dead in the Fort Stewart training area.

The hunter, whose name was not immediately released, was found by family members around 10 p.m. Sunday after he failed to return home.

The hunter was a civilian and was not affiliated with Fort Stewart or Hunter Army Airfield, officials said.

Civilian hunters are allowed to hunt in Fort Stewart training areas after registering with installation hunting officials.

The death is being investigated by the Bryan County Sheriff's Office and the military.
