BENZIE COUNTY, MI - A Northern Michigan family's horse was killed by a hunter who shot the animal believing it was a deer.

According to the Associated Press, owner Tracii Kunish-Chandler told UpNorthLive.com that she found her horse, Kodi, dead near a bait pile in Benzie County on Nov. 19, the fifth day of deer season.

The Benzie County Sheriff's Department has determined that the red-and-white horse was shot and killed by an 83-year-old man who had the bait pile set up for deer nearby.

The man is being charged with careless discharge of a firearm, UpNorthLive reported, since he broke hunting laws by shooting after legal hunting hours.
