Two Hunters Shot and Killed in Yazoo County
23 November 2003
Two hunters were shot and killed Saturday morning by
fellow hunters in separate shootings in rural Yazoo County.
According to the Yazoo County coroner, 81-year-old
Sylvester Young of Yazoo City was hunting at eight Saturday morning in a
wooded area between Yazoo City and Benton. When Young walked up a ditch bank
into a field, another hunter shot him. The name of the hunter was not
released. Although the shooting appears accidental, the Yazoo County
Sheriff's Department is investigating.
Another hunting shooting took place later Saturday about
12 miles southeast of Yazoo City. Sixty-one-year-old Travis Powell, also of
Yazoo City, was killed while he was searching for a deer that had been shot.
The name of the hunter who shot Powell also was not released.
