Hunting Accident Kills Odebolt Man

26 November 2003

ODEBOLT, Iowa -- The Sac County Sheriff's Office is investigating the Monday shooting death of an Odebolt man.

Michael Garey Friedrichsen, 31, was found sitting in a pickup in a field five miles southeast of Odebolt with a gunshot wound, the sheriff's office said.

Friedrichsen was found by friends with whom he was hunting, the department said. After being discovered, Friedrichsen was transported to Loring Hospital in Sac City, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Follow-up scene investigation conducted by the Sac County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources revealed that Friedrichsen was traveling north in a field when he was struck by a bullet that went through the driver's door window and is believed to have been fired from a member of the hunting party.

The bullet recovered at autopsy will be sent to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation crime lab to determine which weapon fired the fatal shot.

Responding to the incident were the Odebolt and Sac City Ambulances, Odebolt Fire and Rescue and the Odebolt Police Department.
