Safe Hunting?

Police Name Man Killed in Hunting Accident

Police today named a hunter accidentally shot dead by his companion near Otaki, north of Wellington yesterday.

Waikanae man Robert Van Ooyen, 46, was shot about 5.30pm in the Otaki Forks area of Tararua Ranges.

His body was found at 7am this morning and airlifted out after attempts to fly in last night were abandoned for safety reasons, Palmerston North police Sergeant Bill Nicholson said.

Police were examining the scene where the body was found.

Mr Nicholson said early indications were that the shooting was due to accidental discharge rather than mistaken identity.

Police were alerted to the shooting yesterday after the man's distraught hunting companion walked for two hours out of the area to get help.

Mr. Nicholson said it was "far too early" to say whether charges would be laid.
