TOWNSEND The first day of shotgun deer-hunting season opened with an accident in the state forest here yesterday morning, when a Westford man was shot in the head by a fellow hunter as a bear approached their group, officials said.

Michael J. Doherty, 41, of Oak Road, was in critical condition at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center at Worcester this morning, a nursing supervisor said.

It appears that Doherty was accidentally shot by one of his friends who was aiming at the black bear that was approaching them around 10 a.m., according to Felix Browne, a Massachusetts Environmental Police spokesman.
