Hunter Killed in Charles County

Posted - December 02, 2003 4:53pm

La Plata, Md. (AP) - Charles County authorities say a hunter was shot and killed by a companion who apparently mistook him for a deer.

Twenty-one-year-old Brian Reed was hunting with his 15-year-old half brother on wooded, family-owned property late Sunday afternoon.

According to the sheriff's office, the teenager fired at what he thought was a large deer and struck Reed.

Reed was flown to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.

The investigation continues, but a sheriff's office spokeswoman says there's nothing to indicate it was anything more than a tragic accident.

A Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman says the DNR is investigating for any hunting violations. It was the first fatality of the two-week firearm deer season that began Saturday.
