Man Dies in Hunting Accident

November 30, 2003, 10:09 AM EST

OWASCO, N.Y. -- A 20-year-old hunter died after his shotgun discharged while hunting in a wooded area, wounding him in the head, authorities said.

Kyle Kent was taken to Auburn Memorial Hospital Saturday, where he was pronounced dead, said Cayuga County Sheriff Rob Outhouse.

The shooting happened a day after another hunter was hurt while hunting in the same woods about 20 miles southwest of Syracuse. David Iocolano suffered a flesh wound from a 12-gauge shotgun while hunting with four other people.

Both shootings were being treated as accidents, Outhouse said.

Kent was hunting with a group of 12 friends, trying to track a deer the hunters had wounded earlier. Kent's shotgun discharged, wounding him in the head, Outhouse said.

One of the hunters called police on a cell phone to report the shooting.
