Safe Hunting?
Teen Shot and Killed While Hunting Elk
Lapwai, Idaho _ A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed
Monday night in a hunting accident on the Nez Perce Reservation.
The teen was hunting elk with a friend near Forest, Idaho,
when he was shot at about 8 p.m. The friend performed CPR, but the teen
died at the scene, said tribal spokesman Rob Smith.
The tribe isn't releasing the boy's name until more
relatives are notified, Smith said.
Kim Ellery Rickman Jr., 21, was arrested by Nez Perce
Tribal Police on charges of involuntary manslaughter. Rickman, address
unknown, was taken to Latah County Jail and is on a 24-hour suicide watch.
Smith said he doesn't think Rickman and the teen knew each
other since Rickman was with another person in a separate hunting
party.
"Rickman was hunting elk and he heard an elk bugle, saw
movement and fired,"
Smith said. "Then he heard screaming."
Tribal police are investigating the shooting with the FBI
and local law enforcement agencies.
Forest is on the southern edge of the Nez Perce
Reservation.
