Four hunters charged with poaching deer at a closed Edison
landfill over the weekend also face civil penalties for hunting without the
proper state permits and killing more deer than allowed, state officials
said yesterday.
Officers from the state Division of Fish and Wildlife
issued three summonses each to Matthew Beauregard, 35, of Monroe; Paul
Callahan, 47, of Cape May Court House; Michael Callahan, 45, of Denville;
and Thomas Lagattuta, 37, of Jamesburg. They shot nine
deer Saturday at the closed ILR landfill, said Elaine Makatura, spokeswoman
for the state Department of Environmental Protection.
Authorities said the four men rode Lagattuta's 14-foot
boat along the Raritan River, tied up on the edge of the landfill and shot
five does and four bucks. Several of the deer were found in the boat,
Makatura said.
All the men had hunting licenses but had failed to
register their shotguns for hunting, failed to have permits for hunting in
that section of the state, and failed to obtain the forms for deer kill,
Makatura said.
Fish and Wildlife officers also issued a summons to a man
who killed four does, two more than permitted at one time, and to a man for
shooting two bucks, one more than permitted, said Makatura. She declined
identify those individuals.
