"Although deer hunting licenses can be sold throughout the nine-day
gun/deer season this year, 631,000 were sold for the first weekend of
the regular deer season and licenses will be sold all week. One hunter
was killed by what seems to have been a stray bullet the first weekend
of the hunt. The fatal accident took place in Burnett County. Three
other non-fatal injuries took place, two of them self-inflicted. A 15
year-old girl shot herself in the leg when she stumbled while tracking
a deer in Grant County. A hunter shot his little finger while climbing
into a tree stand on Waukesha County. A group shooting at a startled
deer resulted in a hunter getting shot in the foot in Ozaukee County.
Hopefully there will be no other injuries this week.
"Same old hunting violations
"Wardens cited hunters for the same violations that they have for
years, for breaking rules that were made to save lives. Hunters lives,
not deer. Citations were given to hunters who had uncased guns in
vehicles. Some of those guns were unloaded. Others were shooting too
close to the road, or on it. And, believe it or not, although two
gallons of bait is legal, there were baiting violations. Some states
allow automatic feeders; it is illegal in Wisconsin, as at least one
hunter found out."
