Mother of shooting victim from Oceana County faces shooter in court

John E. Roswell
HART -- The unintended killer turned in the courtroom to
face his victim's mother, his face anguished.
"I'm sorry. I never meant for this to happen," said John Eugene Roswell.
"It was a complete accident, and I'm never going to forgive myself for it."
Roswell was about to be sentenced in the Thanksgiving 2007 death of
28-year-old Anthony Fuller of Hart, shot once in the head while hunting with
Roswell and two other men. Roswell, 47, of 13 Courtland in Hart, pleaded no
contest last month to accidental discharge of a firearm causing death. ...
The shooting happened east of Hart, off Filmore Road and 144th Avenue.
Fuller, Roswell and two other men were hunting, with Fuller and Roswell near
each other and the other two some distance away and out of sight.
Authorities said the other two spotted a deer, and both shot and missed.
The third shot, investigators believe, was Roswell's: an accidental
discharge, possibly while he was swinging his arm up to shoot.
...
Thomas imposed a jail sentence near the middle of state guidelines: four
months, with the option of a nine-month sentence if Roswell violates
probation. The judge imposed a year's probation and restitution of $10,680
-- just enough to pay for Fuller's burial and headston.
