Wolf poacher sentenced
Stephen Popp, Jr. was sentenced to 20 days community service and ordered
to pay more than $2,500 in fines.
IRON COUNTY -- A Green Bay man who killed a wolf in Upper Michigan and
was caught hunting without a license was sentenced today in Iron County
Circuit Court.
Stephen Popp, Jr. was sentenced to 20 days community service and ordered
to pay more than $2,500 in fines. He was also put on six months probation
and is banned from hunting for two years.
Popp was hunting in Iron County on November 16 without a license when he
shot and killed a wolf.
The judge said not paying for a hunting license puts Popp at greater
fault.
"You didn't bother to pay the fine or the fees that all of the other
hunters pay to maintain the deer herd and the natural resources of this
state," stated Judge C. Joseph Schwedler. "You just came over here and
decided you were going to hunt without a license at all."
Judge Schwelder gave Popp the choice of 20 days community service or 10
days in jail.
He will serve his community service in Green Bay.
