Hunter charged with illegal weapon possession
MONTICELLO - A Melville, Long Island man was arrested Sunday during a
deer road check on Route 17B in Monticello for illegally possession a
weapon.
Monticello Police stopped Joseph Moder, 43, for illegally taking a doe in
a protected area. When officers conducted a criminal background check, they
learned he was barred from possessing a rifle due to a 1998 conviction for
felony DWI in Suffolk County.
Moder was charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon in the
fourth degree. He was released on $200 bail. The doe he illegally took was
confiscated by state DEC Police and his hunting rifle was confiscated by
Monticello Police.
