APPLETON — A Menasha man was charged with a felony Wednesday after
the state Department of Natural Resources determined that he hunted with
a firearm despite having a prior felony conviction.
Peter A. Schmidt, 35, was charged in Outagamie County Court with one
count of firearm possession by a felon.
A DNR warden examined records and found Schmidt shot two deer in
2008. The DNR checked his criminal record and discovered a felony
marijuana conviction.
Schmidt told the warden he knew he couldn't have guns, but continued
hunting because he "was not convicted of a violent felony," the criminal
complaint says.
Schmidt faces up to 10 years in prison and $25,000 in fines if
convicted. He will make his first court appearance on Oct. 20.
