A Kaplan professional hunting guide has been sentenced in federal
court.
Curmet Landry, the owner of Landry's Guide Service in
Kaplan, has been charged with conducting an illegal commercial duck
hunt. The charges against Landry stem from a three-year undercover
sting operation conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. He
has been ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and serve five years
probation, with a special condition that prevents him for hunting
during his probation time. Landry pled guilty in August 2011 for
knowingly conducting an illegal duck hunt.
Landry admitted
in open court that during the 2006 special teal season, he assisted
his guide service clients in illegal duck hunts. During that hunt,
the Landry directed undercover federal agents, who were posing as
his clients, to kill more than the daily limit of teal. He further
directed the agents to kill five wood ducks, which were abandoned in
the field because the season for wood ducks was closed at the time.
