Two Canada geese have been shot with similar arrows this year
near Century Farm Park in Naperville, killing one of them, officials
said today in an alert asking for help from the community.
One goose was shot Feb. 23 and the other May 7 near the park at 715
Sigmund Road, both with similar arrows, Naperville police said in a
community alert.
The first injured goose was located and
captured in March by members of Chicago Bird Collision Monitors, who
treated the bird for non-life threatening injuries.
The
second goose was wounded in its wing and body, and after it was
located on May 12 it had to be euthanized due to the injuries,
officials said.
...
(Sgt. Gregg Bell of the
Naperville police) said using a crossbow or shooting a bow-and-arrow
in city limits can be dangerous.
“We just want the community
to be aware they are federally protected birds.
It’s not only
against federal law, but to hunt or do any kind of trapping within
city limits is illegal,” Bell said.

The alert
reminds people that hunting or trapping are prohibited under city
ordinance, and Canada geese are protected under the Federal
Migratory Bird Act of 1918.
Anyone with information about
the attacks is asked to call Animal Control at 630-420-6178 or Crime
Stoppers at 630-420-6006, according to the alert.
