WI: Deer Kills Down, Injuries and Violations Up

December 11, 2013

From News.WPR.org

Deer kills dropped seven percent from 2012, probably due to a harsh winter that hurt deer last year in the north and cold weather for hunters during the start of this year's season.

Department of Natural Resources law enforcement director Randy Stark says the chilly temperatures a few weeks ago may have also triggered an increase in hunters with self-inflicted wounds, from two to four.

Also troublesome to the DNR is that the number of violations for hunters illegally using bait went up by 16 over last year, and there was a doubling in violations for people in an illegal place, possessing or transporting a loaded gun in a vehicle.

18 percent of hunters contacted by wardens were hunting illegally.
