MYRTLE

Mrytle's
wiry vines
enclosed stones
near gravel paths,

encircled pines
and hemlocks,
reached tendrils
over rocks,

softened the granite hill
with a dense trembling
of shiny darkness,

inched
oval leaves
between
steps,

spread before us
the first flowers - shiver
hugging snow-wet ground

periwinkle
pinwheels
turning
smiles up

on our winter-pinched
faces.
