“For it became Him (Jesus), for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons into glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.”
The whole creation is eagerly and anxiously awaiting the manifestation of the sons of God for the creation itself shall be set free from the bondage of death and decay into the glorious liberty of all God’s children. (Read Romans Chapter 8) Apart from suffering none of the creatures have much of a chance and apart from the one who suffered for us they have no chance!
Nobody told you including me that life was just a bed of roses. We all suffer and we all have God available to us by His grace to be victorious. Suffering is not a curse to those who are called of God. The bible says Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and with man.
“Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” (Hebrews 12:11)
“But let patience have her perfect work, that you may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” (James 1:4)
Remember that when we see Jesus Christ we will be like Him. This will not happen by some form of magic. It will require the steps of transformation. Malachi 3:2-3 says, “But who may abide the day of his coming? And who shall stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ sope: and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi and purge them as gold and silver that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.”
What you rightly have to offer is a temple, your body that it may be filled with the fullness of God. In order to do this God needs to purify you so that all your attentiveness is on our Lord Jesus Christ. All the impurities need to be skimmed away till all that left is a new creature, one that is already filling your spirit but wants to also fill your soul, mind, emotion and will.
If Jesus was made perfect by suffering be mindful of the fact that we are His sons and daughters. The Apostle Paul said, “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. (Romans 8:18) This great apostle understood the purpose of suffering and went into some depth on this teaching in Colossians Chapter 1. One thing we know is that through Christ horrible sufferings have come our way to bless us even if their source had not that intention. I am reminded of Corrie ten Boom. She was thrown into a large room with other women in a Nazi prison camp only to discover of all things that the room was filled with lice and fleas. How much more could she stand she wondered. The guards would never go into that room or disturb the occupants because of the insects. Many people engaged in the bible study that the women enjoyed in that room and went to their death full of life because of a smuggled in testament and some fleas and lice. Enjoy your suffering not because you like pain but because of the transformation that is coming your way.
