Vegetarianism: healthier, fuller lives

Welcome to the weekly CVA blog! In it you will find famous quotes, news and commentaries.

Our lifestyle reflects our inner most convictions and beliefs. Adopting a plant-based diet is a powerful statement. Have a Merry Christmas full of compassion, peace and love for all of God’s Creation!

1. Flu virus can survive in frozen lakes
2. Famous quote – Neal D. Barnard, M.D., President, Physicians Committee for Responsible
Medicine
3. A no-brainer – milk products have negative effects on human health
4. Bible verse – Psalm 104:10-14
5. Vegetarianism and intelligence
6. Blood transfusions and Mad Cow disease

1. Flu virus can survive in frozen lakes: Scientists have found viral RNA in the ice in Siberia, along the major flight paths of migrating waterfowl. They believe that frozen viruses could potentially become the source of new epidemics that sicken and kill generations after they were last seen; and with the spread of the H5N1 avian influenza, there are serious reasons for concern.

Approximately 200 million birds have died or have been slaughtered worldwide due to the bird flu and migrating birds are looked at as culprit for its transmittal. More studies are planned to be conducted in Greenland and Canada.

2. “The beef industry has contributed to more American deaths than all the wars of this century, all natural disasters, and all automobile accidents combined. If beef is your idea of 'real food for real people,' you'd better live real close to a real good hospital.”
~ Neal D. Barnard
, M.D., President, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

3. A no-brainer: In spite of the claims by the dairy industry, and the millions of dollars they spend annually to try to convince people that milk products are good for humans, the ample scientific evidence indicates the contrary. According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, among other health organizations, three out of four people from around the world, including an estimated 25 percent of individuals in the United States, are unable to digest the milk sugar lactose, which causes diarrhea and gas.

These organizations also say that milk is very low in iron and to get the U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance of 11 milligrams of iron, an infant would have to drink more than 22 quarts of milk each day; causes blood loss from the intestinal tract, depleting the body’s iron; is frequently contaminated with antibiotics and hormones; and is one of the most common causes of food allergy.

Ironically, the quest for profit and for pleasure leads us to ignore God’s will and natures’ ways, and come up with “solutions” that in turn harm our health, the environment and animals. A good example is www.lactagen.com that offers “the only real solution to lactose intolerance” and “reconditions your digestive system to better handle breaking down dairy products.”

Interestingly, this site says that more than 70 million Americans and over 250 million people worldwide suffer from lactose intolerance or other gastro-intestinal disorders; and that 95% Asian Americans, 90% African Americans, 74% Native Americans, 70% Hispanic Americans and 25% Caucasians are lactose intolerant. People should ponder that maybe God designed us to not consume dairy products.

Share with you family and friends that a plant-based diet honors God’s creation by helping us stay healthy, reducing animal suffering and preserving the environment.

4. Psalm 104:10-14 “He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains. They give water to all the beasts of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. The birds of the air nest by the waters; they sing among the branches. He waters the mountains from his upper chambers; the earth is satisfied by the fruit of his work. He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate-bringing forth food from the earth."

The survival of all creatures depends on the natural world that God created. We are called to be good stewards of it. By exploiting and abusing our bodies, animals and the environment we are only bringing misery to all and showing disobedience to God.

5. Vegetarianism and intelligence: A recent study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that vegetarians are more thoughtful about what they eat and have a higher IQ. The study was based on more than 8,000 people whose IQ was measured at age 10 and later on at age 30. The researchers found that the ones who said were vegetarians had an IQ of around five points higher than those who continued to eat meat as they grew up.

They concluded, "Our finding that children with greater intelligence are more likely to report being vegetarian as adults, coupled with the evidence on the potential health benefits of a vegetarian diet, may help to explain why higher IQ in childhood or adolescence is linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease in adult life."

6. Blood transfusions and Mad Cow disease: A recent study published in The Lancelet shows that the human form of mad cow disease can be passed from person to person through blood transfusions. Researches said that samples from a 32-year-old British man who died from Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease confirmed he contracted it from a blood donor, and two others from a group of 66 people who received infected blood died before their illnesses were confirmed.

Sometimes sickness is a consequence of or own actions. The exploitation of animals not only causes tremendous suffering to them, but to us. Hopefully, humanity will realize that compassion and love toward all Creation help us live healthier, fuller lives.
