1. Confirmed case of bird flu in England: On Saturday, the European Commission confirmed the virus detected at a turkey farm in England is the H5N1 strain of avian influenza; however, further test will determine if it is the same strain as the Asian one. It is believed that 2,000 birds had already died of this virus before it was confirmed. As a preventive measure 160,000 turkeys were slaughtered at the Bernard Matthews farm. Although authorities are reassuring the public that it’s safe to consume poultry, the H5N1 strain can be transmitted to humans and has killed more than 160 people worldwide since 2003, mostly in Asia.

2. “In order to satisfy one human stomach, so many lives are taken away. We must promote vegetarianism. It is extremely important.”
~ The XIV Dalai Lama of Tibet (1935 - present), quote from Live in a Better Way, 2001.

3. A peak into Dr. Dean Ornish’s pantry: Dr. Dean Ornish is the founder, president, and director of the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California. His clinical research demonstrated that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse even severe coronary heart disease, without drugs or surgery. He is the author of five best-selling books, including Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease, Eat More, Weigh Less, and Love & Survival.

In the March issue of the Reader’s Digest magazine, Dr. Dean Ornish shared what he and his family eat as they pretty much they follow their own advice. Their meals are based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and soy products in their natural forms, with a little fish sometimes. Dr. Ornish also shares what foods they choose when eating out, even at fast food restaurants, and why this diet works.

In his own words: “I'm 53 years old, and I've been eating this way since I was 19. I'm six feet tall, and my weight stays around 175 pounds. I'm on no medications, and my total cholesterol level has remained below 140 to 150 mg/dl since then. My LDL ranges from 70 to 80 mg/dl, and my blood pressure is 110/70. But the main reason for eating and living this way is that I feel so much better when I eat healthy. My adolescent allergies and childhood asthma disappeared, and fortunately, I'm rarely ill.”

While a little fish is probably safe health-wise, it’s not necessary in a well-balanced plant-based diet. Moreover, the fish industry has caused havoc in the aquatic flora and fauna driving many species to the verge of extinction; and the suffering of fish cannot be ignored.

4. (RSV) 1 Corinthians 13:6-7 “it [love] does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

While we certainly witness cruelty and horrors daily, we should also rest our hope on God’s love that transcends all things. Love is a powerful statement of our faith, and our love for all Creation reflects God’s love and our willingness to be obedient to our loving Creator.

5. Free bird-flu book and video on-line: The book “Bird Flu: A Virus of Our Own Hatching,” written by Dr. Michael Greger, director of Public Health and Animal Agriculture for The Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS), is now available for free on-line at: http://www.BirdFluBook.org. A four-minute video can also be viewed for free at the site as well.

6. Salmonella outbreak in Sweden: Despite Sweden's claim to have poultry stocks with the lowest Salmonella infection rates in the EU, a recent Salmonella outbreak forced the slaughtering of 100,000 birds. The Swedish Poultry Meat Association states on their website that "Sweden has achieved efficient control of Salmonella, despite the industrialization of animal production," ... "Due to the control, both red and white meat produced in Sweden can today be claimed to be virtually free from Salmonella." This outbreak has proven the industry that they cannot let their guards down, especially when they clearly thought it wouldn’t happen to them.

This kind of outbreaks should alert us that working against God’s Creation can only bring misery to humanity and animals. By manipulating and exploiting animals for profit and pleasure we are failing at being good stewards of God’s Creation.
