Honoring God Taking Care of our Bodies

Welcome to the weekly CVA blog!  In it you will find famous quotes, news and commentaries.

1. PCRM’s New Public Service Announcement

2. Quote: Ellen White (1827-1915), co-founder of the Seventh Day Adventists

3. Is Health Food Healthy?

4. Bible Verse: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

5. Toxic Whale Meat

6. A Return to Health

1. PCRM’s New Public Service Announcement:  The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has released a new TV ad, Protective Gear, advocating a plant-based diet for children focusing on the prevention of certain cancers, heart disease and obesity. Please share with friends and family. You can watch it at http://www.pcrm.org/news/psas/index.html

2. “The moral evils of a flesh diet are not less marked than are the physical ills. Flesh food is injurious to health, and whatever affects the body has a corresponding effect on the mind and the soul. Think of the cruelty to animals meat-eating involves, and its effect on those who inflict and those who behold it. How it destroys the tenderness with which we should regard those creatures of God!”
 ~ Ellen White
(1827-1915), co-founder of the Seventh Day Adventists.

3. Is Health Food Healthy?  Not necessarily! Jeff Novivk, acclaimed author, researcher, nutritionist, and teacher for over two decades, offers expert advice on what foods to eat and what foods to avoid. He explains the difference between “Health” food and “Healthy Food”; and as a former account manager at Kraft Foods, he exposes the deceptive tricks corporate food companies use in order to claim their foods are "healthy" or "low-fat." Don’t miss the easy rules for reading food labels.

4. (RSV) 1 Corinthians 6:19-20:
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in our body.

By taking care of our bodies we are honoring and obeying God. Our choice of diet is an important one since it affects our health, God’s animals and the environment.

5. Toxic Whale Meat:  Health officials have found alarming high levels of mercury (more than 10 times the advised) in whale meat served in school lunches in rural Japan.  Hisato Ryono, an assemblyman in Taiji, shared his concern and said that although whaling will not be stopped, at least they want to test whale meat before it is shipped to schools nationwide.

Whaling, in this case, is not only bringing misery to whales, but also to innocent children who have been exposed to high levels of mercury.  Causing suffering to God’s animals and not taking care of our health is not honoring God’s Creation.

6. A Return to Health: Here’s one more story about the dramatic and beneficial changes that adopting a plant-based diet can have on our health. Joanne Irwin, a semi-retired social worker, shares how a routine blood test revealed that her LDL (Bad cholesterol) level had skyrocketed far above normal. This increase led to consult with Dr. Kumara Siddharta at Emerald Physicians Services in South Yarmouth, who suggested she try a vegan diet for a few months. As Irwin says, the results were fantastic, “But since I cut out meat, fish and dairy products, my LDL went from 170 to 69 in four months. My cholesterol went from 246 to 74. My friends noticed a change in my energy and asked what I was doing differently. I had changed my eating habits, nothing more. But my life has taken a radical shift in a wonderful direction.”
