6. So Many Reasons to Be a Vegetarian!

1. Endangered Aquatic Life: Once again, we learn about the devastating effects of the fishing industry on rivers and oceans. In this case, Greenpeace is calling for immediate actions in Greece to replenish depleted fish stocks in the Aegean and Ionian seas after the European Union (EU) announced lower-than-expected cuts for 2008 catch quotas. Greece has among the largest fishing fleets in the EU by numbers and in 2006 Greeks fished about 90,000 tons, about half the amount compared to 1994, mainly due to depleted stocks.

The devastating effects that the fishing industry is causing in God’s Creation are pushing us closer to a point of no return. Unless consumers stop supporting the fishing industry, any change is unlikely to happen. Being mindful of how our diet affects other creatures and the environment reflects good stewardship of God’s Creation.

2. "The sun, the moon and the stars would have disappeared long ago... had they happened to be within the reach of predatory human hands." ~ Havelock Ellis (1859 - 1939), British doctor, sexual psychologist and social reformer. From The Dance of Life, 1923

3. Presidential Candidates on Climate Change: There are many issues to ponder at the time of casting our vote this year, and climate change is one of them. This article summarizes the position of some presidential candidates on this issue.

4. (RSV) 2 Corinthians 5:18-20
"All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God."

Being reconciled to God implies reconciliation with His/Her Creation as well. By showing compassion, mercy and justice to all creatures, we are participating in this reconciliation; and therefore, carrying out God's will.

5. Eat This! This short, non-graphic, cartoonish video, exposes the negative effects of raising animals for food, from environmental degradation to world hunger. It encourages the audience to be mindful of what we eat and give plant-based foods a chance.
