Factory Farming Damages God’s Creation

Welcome to the weekly CVA blog! In it you will find famous quotes, news and commentaries.

1. The consequences of Confined Animal Feeding Operations
2. Famous quote – Janice Swanson, animal behavior specialist at Kansas State University.
3. Poor Children Victims of Global Warming
4. Bible verse – Ephesians 4:32
5. Factory Farms on the Spotlight Again
6. A Veg Diet Can Feed the World

1. The consequences of Confined Animal Feeding Operations: A report released in April by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), titled CAFOs Uncovered: The Untold Costs of Confined Animal Feeding Operations, exposed the negative effects that Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO's) have on humans, animals and the environment. Margaret Mellon, director of UCS's Food and Environment Program said, “If CAFOs were forced to pay for the ripple effects of harm they have caused, they wouldn't be dominating the U.S. meat industry like they are today.”

2. "You are not handling a lump of plastic. You are handling animals with central nervous systems that feel pain and suffering." ~ Janice Swanson, animal behavior specialist at Kansas State University.

3. Poor Children Victims of Global Warming: The main victims of climate change caused by the rich developed world are poor children. According to the UNICEF report "Our Climate, Our Children, Our Responsibility", climate change could add 40,000-160,000 child deaths a year in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa due to lower economic growth and expansion of the range of deadly diseases such as malaria.

Animal agriculture contributes to almost 1/5 of green house emissions. One way to be good stewards of God's Creation and to help stop global warming is to transition to a plant-based diet.

4. (RSV) Ephesians 4:32

"...and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."

Christ's teachings emphasize compassion, love and forgiveness. While it's not easy to show kindness and forgiveness to those we believe cause hurt and harm to God's animals, we should remember that we are all sinners in need of forgiveness. We can witness Christ's love for all by being good stewards of God's Creation to the best of our abilities, by the grace of God.

5. Factory Farms on the Spotlight Again: The enormous negative consequences of factory farming on human health and the environment are undermining rural America's economic stability. In addition, factory farming fails to provide the humane treatment of livestock says the 2 1/2 -year analysis sponsored by the Pew Charitable Trusts and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health that calls for major changes in the way corporate agriculture produces meat, milk and eggs. The report highlights human illnesses caused by drug-resistant bacteria associated with use of antibiotics on feedlots and the degradation of land, water and air quality caused by animal waste.

6. A Veg Diet Can Feed the World: George Monbiot, writer for The Guardian, exposes the food crisis problem in light of a meat-centered diet. He rightly explains that off the 2.13bn tones likely to be consumed this year, only 1.01bn, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), will feed people. Monbiot addresses the solution by suggesting the transition to a plant-based diet, better for humanitarian reason and environmental ones as well.
