1. High Levels of Mercury in Tuna

Tuna is the nation's second most popular seafood and its consumption is promoted by the government via school lunch programs, WIC (the federal food program for poor women and children), and even in the FDA and US Department of Agriculture dietary recommendations. Although it is known for being a low-carb food, high in protein, low in fat and rich in Omega-3s, it could very possibly contain alarming high levels of mercury, which are very detrimental to our health.

It is not necessary to eat tuna, or any fish, to eat a balanced diet. We can obtain all the nutrients, including Omega-3 fatty acids, from a plant-based diet. This way, we don’t cause intense suffering the aquatic creatures and we avoid the many contaminants (such as mercury) found in sea-food.

2. Famous Quote

“Focus on eating lower on the food chain, with more plants and fruits and less meat and dairy. It’s that simple.” ~ Kate Geagan, dietitian and author of Go Green, Get Lean

3. New Regulations for Rendering Cow Brains and Spines into Animal Food

In order to prevent the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad-cow disease, new federal rules on rendering cow brains and spines into animal food are set to be implemented in April. However, farmers in Kentucky, which has more beef cattle than any other state east of the Mississippi River, are concerned about the new regulations since they would make rendering more expensive and complicated.

The vast quantity of farmed animals that are processed makes it increasingly harder to dispose of them in safe manner without negatively affecting our health or the environment. By adopting a plant-based diet we help reduce the animals raised for food; and therefore, we help reduce the risk of spread of many diseases such as BSE.

4. (RSV) Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

God's promises us that we are never alone. Throughout our life's obstacles, God is there with us, giving us the courage and support to withstand it all.

5. Plant-Based Diets: The Non-Disease Diets

This informative article summarizes the many studies that show that plant-based diets are very effective at preventing and reversing many health problems, such as high cholesterol, high blood sugar levels, excess weight, etc., while enjoying plenty of carbohydrates and delicious foods.

A plant-based diet is God's ideal diet for us, since it helps reconcile God's Creation by showing care and reverence to our bodies, animals and the environment.

6. Ebola Virus in Pigs

The appearance of the Ebola virus in pigs last year in the Philippines is very worrisome to international health and veterinary experts who traveled there in order to investigate how a form of the Ebola virus found in primates has been transmitted to pigs. The main concern is that once inside the pig, the virus could mutate into a form deadly to humans — as bird flu is thought to have done.
