1. Are Humanely Raised Animals OK to Eat?

The writer of this article is Professor Francione, a distinguished Professor of Law of Law and Philosophy at Rutgers University, who was the first academic to teach animal rights theory in an American law school. Here he challenges those people who claim it's all right to eat animals who have been raised in a human way, implying that animals do not have an interest in living only in not suffering. Prof. Francione refers to videos from slaughterhouses that show clearly how cows know what's going to happen to them and want to escape at any cost.

Animals were created by a loving God, who gave them a desire to live and a fear to die. Whether an animal suffers or not should not dictate if it’s all right to eat. We should show reverence and compassion to all of God’s Creation.

2. Famous Quote

“To a man whose mind is free there is something even more intolerable in the sufferings of animals than in the sufferings of man. For with the latter it is at least admitted that suffering is evil and that the man who causes it is a criminal. But thousands of animals are uselessly butchered every day without a shadow of remorse. If any man were to refer to it, he would be thought ridiculous. And that is the unpardonable crime.”

~ Romain Rolland (1866 –1944), French dramatist, essayist, art historian and mystic who was awarded the Nobel Prize of Literature in 1915

3. Smithfield to Delay Phasing-Out Gestation Crates

Due to the financial losses Smithfield Foods Inc. suffered (US$190) this past year, the company announced that the plan to replace "gestation stalls" for pregnant sows with roomier "group housing" by 2017 at all of its farms has been delayed. Bruce Friedrich, vice president for policy for PETA, said: "It's not surprising that when times get tough they jettisoned a plan that was barely a plan in the first place."

How saddening that there's no light at the end of the tunnel for the millions of pigs who suffer unimaginably day after day at Smithfield Foods Inc.! It's is imperative that consumers choose to support compassion over cruelty; and therefore, take a stand to show Smithfield that gestational stalls create only misery to God's animals and the rest of Creation.

4. Bible Verse

(RSV) Psalm 119:30
"I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on your laws."

Jesus taught us the way of truth. The way that glorifies God and honor's all Creation. Everyday we are faced with choices and the path we follow reflects our hearts.

5. Sarah Brown Refuses to Eat Veal

UK's Prime Minister's wife, Sarah Brown, emphatically voiced her feelings toward the G8 Summit meal in which veal was served. She wrote on Twitter: "Am hoping that no veal served at lunch again today - have declined it twice this trip as just feel very strongly about it."

It helps expose the cruelty of veal when a high profile person denounces it publicly. Hopefully Mrs. Sarah Brown's stand against it will serve as an example for others.

6. This Week’s Video

Watch this great interview with Bruce Friedrich, PETA's Vice-President and director of the influential film "Meet Your Meat" that has touched so many lives, humans and animals. Among other things he talks about his new book, "The Animal Activist's Handbook" that he co-authored with Vegan Outreach's Matt Ball.
