God’s Creation in Peril

1. No-Beef Climate Solution

Meat production accounts for approximately a fifth of all greenhouse gas emissions; therefore, India's Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh, suggests stop eating beef as solution to reduce greenhouse gases emission. R. K. Pachauri, the leading Indian climate change scientist who headed the UN's influential panel on climate change, said "If you look at the beef cycle today, you first clear forests, which increases emissions, then you feed cattle all kinds of food grain, which is energy intensive, and then you kill and refrigerate these animals, and then they are transported long distances. Then you buy it and refrigerate it. If you count all the emissions associated with this entire cycle, it is huge."

Transition to a plant-based diet helps to restore the environment by reducing not only greenhouse gases emissions, but also air, water and soil pollution as well as deforestation. It is our sacred responsibility to take care of God's Creation to the best of our abilities.

2. Famous Quote

"We have forgotten how to be good guests, how to walk lightly on the earth as its other creatures do." ~Barbara Ward, Only One Earth (1972)

3. Environmental Destruction by Animal Agriculture

Three-fourths of all the grain grown in the US is devoted to feeding farmed-animals. In fact, there are 86 million acres planted with corn in the U.S. compared to 4.35 million acres planted with vegetables (a mere 5 percent of what's devoted to growing corn). This insane demand for cheap food has helped the expansion of factory farms that now produce almost all of the animal products in this country. This is causing unimaginable suffering to farmed animals and serious problems to our health. Moreover, the tremendous devastation caused by animal agriculture is one of the worst problems humanity is facing. From air, water and soil pollution to deforestation and global warming, industrial agriculture itself is responsible to a wide range of environmental problems.

We are failing miserably at our sacred role of being good stewards of God's Creation! We are causing misery everywhere and we still continue to fulfill our desires for taste, profit and power we no regard of what has been lovingly entrusted to us by our Creator. There is still time to turn things around and one way is to adopt a plant-based diet, which helps reduce the massive cruelty on farmed animals, the degradation of the environment and the production of animal products that sicken so many people every day.

4. Bible Verse

(RSV) Genesis 2:15

The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it.

God instructed Adam to “till” and “keep” the Garden of Eden, and by analogy we may see caring for God’s Creation as our sacred task. We can help take care of God's Creation by transitioning to a plant-based diet that is good for our health, animals and the environment.

5. Great Britain New “Green” Labels

In an effort to transform the British diet and to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, new “green” food labels will show how much carbon was produced in the manufacture and transportation of food. Although the government calls on companies to consider measuring the carbon footprint of goods as well as being more honest about where meat was bred and the standards of welfare, environmental groups said the government needs to bring in legislation rather than a voluntary labeling scheme to really transform food and farming.

It would be helpful if labels would actually reflect the truth behind the manufacturing of a product. However, industries such as the meat and dairy ones, would not likely choose to show in their labels the cruelty inflicted on their animals, the devastation of the environment and the consequences to our health. By adopting a plant-based diet we are confident we are alleviating animal suffering, helping to restore the environment and helping ourselves to reclaim our health.

6. This Week’s Video: Global Warming and Deforestation

Deforestation in the Amazon jungle is largely due to the need for more room to raise cattle and to grown grains to feed them. This video shows the need to transition to a plant-based diet in order to help reduce deforestation and global warming gases.
