2. Famous Quote – Gaylord Nelson

6. This Week’s Video – “Our Pale Blue Dot” narrated by Carl Sagan

1. Mercury in Fish

Mercury, a potent neurotoxin that is damaging to the developing nervous systems of fetuses and children, but can have severe effects on adults, has been found to be present in every single fish tested from 291 freshwater streams across the United States. The study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) shows just how widespread mercury pollution has become in the air, watersheds and fish in freshwater streams.

The consequences for our recklessness are evident in all of God's Creation. We are indiscriminately polluting the Earth that the generations to come will inherit. It is time to really ponder what kind of legacy we are leaving behind.

2. Famous Quote

"The ultimate test of man's conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard."

- Gaylord Nelson, former governor of Wisconsin, founder of Earth Day

3. Veg for the Environment

Mike Tidwell, director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, shares his reason for being a vegetarian although he loves the taste of meat: his 11 year-old. Tidwell is very concerned about climate change and the consequences it might bring for the future generations; and therefore, animal agriculture's immense contribution to global warming has made him adopt a plant-base diet. To read the full article please search online for The Low-Carbon Diet

Kudos for Mike Tidwell for doing the right thing for God’s Creation in spite of his great desire for meat! Global warming, animal suffering, diseases… many are the reasons for adopting a vegetarian diet that help us to actively participate in the reconciliation of God’s Creation.

4. Bible Verse

(RSV) Philippians 2:5-8

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.

What a poignant reminder that we ought to be humble like Jesus! As humans, we are fast to forget how dominion and power need to be dealt with humility and love. Only then we can follow God.

5. The Reality Behind Factory Farms

Journalist David Kirby, author of "Animal Factory", explains in this interview the health and environmental problems of factory farms, from untreated animal waste to polluted waterways. To read the full interview please search online for The problem with factory farms

Factory farms are destroying God's creation, from our health, to God's animals and to the environment. If these factory farms had no support from the consumer, they would die off. It is imperative that people recognize the transcendence of transitioning to a plant-base diet.

6. This Week’s Video

This riveting video about "our pale blue dot", planet Earth, is narrated by Carl Sagan. The last pictures of Earth taken by Voyager 1 are depicted in this video, which invariably exposes the fragility and uniqueness of the planet Earth. Carl Sagan said, "It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."
