August 29, 2011

3. Justice Served?

1. The Love Of A Mother Cow

Dr. Holly Cheever writes a heart-breaking story about the incredible mothering protection instincts a cow has. This is the story of a desperate cow trying to save one of her calves after having given birth numerous times before and having experienced the loss of each of her babies. I hope this story helps everyone understand that cows and their babies are unnecessarily and brutally exploited to no end, and that it is consumer's hands to end this barbarism. 2. This Week’s Famous Quote

To a man whose mind is free there is something even more intolerable in the sufferings of animals than in the sufferings of man. For with the latter it is at least admitted that suffering is evil and that the man who causes it is a criminal. But thousands of animals are uselessly butchered every day without a shadow of remorse. If any man were to refer to it, he would be thought ridiculous. And that is the unpardonable crime.

~ Romain Rolland, author and Nobel Prize recipient in 1915

3. Justice Served?

Thanks to the Mercy For Animals' shocking undercover video of egregious animal cruelty taking place at E6 Cattle Company in Texas, the E6 owner was handed down one-year probation and ordered to pay a $4,000 fine and the foreman has been arrested on misdemeanor animal cruelty charges. Moreover, five former employees of E6 Cattle are facing felony-level charges of cruelty to animals although all five workers have fled and have yet to be arrested. Although the consequences for these horrible acts seem like a slap on the wrist, the mere fact that there have been consequences is a step toward a more just world. The more we expose victimization, the faster a peaceful world may be achieved.

4. This Week’s Bible Verse

(RSV) Proverbs 17:22

"A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones."

It is virtually impossible to go through life without experiencing and witnessing suffering; however, our attitude can certainly make a difference in us and others in a physical, spiritual and psychological way. A cheerful heart is contagious, too!

5. Book Recommendation: Sister Species: Women, Animals And Social Justice

In Sister Species: Women, Animals And Social Justice Lisa A. Kemmerer introduces the reader at length to the topic of animal activism and its close connection to other forms of oppression such as sexism, racism, homophobia, etc.

The book is comprised of essays focusing on animal ethics and written by a diverse group of women sharing about their experiences in many areas of animal exploitation such as cock fighting, factory farming, the bushmeat trade, etc; and also touches on issues like theology and animals. It promises that readers will never look at non-human animals in the same way.
