1. Soy Benefits Our Bodies

Lung cancer is a leading cause of death among women worldwide. A new study published in the Journal of Oncology indicates that consuming high amounts of soy products may help women with lung cancer live longer. Please visit New Study: Soy Foods May Help Women with Lung Cancer Live Longer

Many people avoid soy because of the unfair propaganda around it. However, soy, especially in the form of beans, tofu, milk and tempeh, are nutritionally-high and offer protective effects against many diseases, including cancer. After all, soy has been consumed for thousands of years in Eastern cultures.

2. This Week’s Famous Quote

The more helpless the victim, the greater the crime.

~ Dr. Gerald Curtler

3.  NFL Player Montell Owens Talks Vegan

Jacksonville Jaguars NFL player Montell Owens is yet another pro-athlete who has adopted a vegan diet in order to stay in top shape and take care of his body. Owens, along with many other athletes, is learning that a plant-based diet is optimal for their health as well as beneficial in preventing common chronic diseases that plague our society.

How amazing it is that so many athletes, who are seen as role models, are adopting a plant-based diet! The world is changing and vegan diets are becoming mainstream. Christians around world could speed up this healthy, compassionate and ethical revolution by giving the example. After all, we are called to be good stewards of our bodies; and simply put: we are what we eat.

4. This Week’s Bible Verse

(RSV) 1 Tim 4:1-4

For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.”

This passage reflects Paul’s efforts to fight against a split in the Christian community and does not justify cruel treatment of animals. Here, Paul rebukes false doctrines that forbid marriage as well as certain foods. Christian vegetarians don’t forbid either marriage or meat. Rather, we encourage a plant-based diet as good, responsible, Christian stewardship. Modern animal agriculture is a human creation, and it harms humans, animals, and the earth. While we should thank God for our ability to enjoy food, we may also thank God for providing tasty vegetarian options. Indeed, many Christian vegetarians see each meal as a prayerful reminder of God’s grace and goodness. Each vegetarian meal reminds them of Isaiah’s prophecy that all Creation will live harmoniously at the end of time, as in Eden.

5. Antibiotics in Meat

About 80% of the antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used in livestock. Not surprisingly, researchers have found that this very irresponsible overuse of antibiotics is leading to the creation of super-bugs resistant to antibiotics. Of course, the meat industry refuses to make changes to the way they raise animals in factory farms and ignore the example of other countries, such as Denmark, which has reduced their use of antibiotics by 40%.

Factory farmed animals endure conditions that are unendurable without the regular antibiotics they receive. Humans exploit God’s animals and in the process reap the negative consequences, such as antibiotic resistant bacteria.

It is time to wake up and include God’s animals raised for food in our sphere of compassion, which would lead to a more peaceful, joyous and harmonious world.
